Small Module Reactors

Energy Research, Inc. is actively involved in the programs sponsored by the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Office of Research, in the development of models for applications to small modular reactors (SMRs). This work is in support of the NRC's pre-application and design certification of SMRs and has included the NuScale, m-Power, and W-SMR designs.

The specific activities include:

  • Development and application of models for prediction of accidents and anticipated operation occurrences using the NRC’s TRACE computer code (including the PARCS/3D neutronics model).
  • Development and application of models for prediction of severe accidents and fission product release and transport behavior using the NRC’s MELCOR code for typical Integral Pressurized Water Reactors (iPWRs) (i.e., NuScale, m-Power, and Westinghouse SMR ).
  • Assessment of the applicability of the TRACE computer code for analysis of design basis accidents in Small Modular (Light Water) Reactors.
  • Development of Phenomena Identification Ranking Tables (PIRTs) for assessment of MELCOR applicability to analysis of design basis containment, and reactor/containment system severe accidents for various SMRs.
